“Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” -Bruce Lee
Water cleanses, heals, moves, shapes and shifts while replenishing and bringing life to everything in its path. It is a universe within itself, as even just one drop can host billions of living beings. Water represents life, it is life.
We are made up mostly of water, and we grew our most vital months in a water dense environment. We are designed to be fluid beings. Water changes form to adapt to liquid, solid or vapor, and seeks out its own paths, channels, heights, vastness and depths. We can learn a lot from the wisdom of this powerful conduit, as it is flexible, adaptive, ever changing and always finding a way. Water teaches us there are no true blocks in life, and often the limits (dams) we put on ourselves are not enough to hold us back. Water can be moving and water can be still, but it never settles. In this, we must learn that movement is essential in our lives. Walking, hiking, swaying, stretching – anything that flows energy through a free, unclenched body. Movement is medicine. Keeping things flowing in physical form or in our communication, prevents staleness, dis-ease and disharmony from building up. As you loosen conditioning with the work of the course, you will find yourself less resistant to this ease.
Likewise, try doing this coursework or the reflections and journaling of it in the presence of water, such as a natural stream, lake, river, ocean if possible, or even just a little desktop water fountain will do. Being in or around these liquid bodies feels like a homecoming, and we can sync with the rhythms of the ocean and water bodies we can align with a more natural flow of life.
Drinking water of even just imagining its flow also works wonders. You will see how taking sips of water throughout the day or when you feel “stuck” actually helps keep things flowing in your life – in situations, thoughts and in body. Support this work, and all you do, with plenty of clean water throughout your day. It is especially helpful first thing in the morning, when you wake up dehydrated after averaging eight hours rest.
